Free Congress Foundation's William S. Lind: Bush Administration's Strategies And Tactics In "War On Terrorism" Are Counterproductive
Military theorist William S. Lind, Director of the Center for Cultural Conservatism at the Free Congress Foundation, challenges the effectiveness of the Bush administration's strategy and tactics in the so-called "War on Terrorism."
In a newly published monograph, "George W. Bush's `War on Terrorism': Faulty Strategy and Bad Tactics?," Lind argues that America is fighting a conflict like no other that it has encountered in its 225 yeas of existence. In particular, Lind stresses the conventional wisdom that has dominated the United States' military and foreign policy during the last century is no longer effective.
"If the ultimate goal of the strategy is to prevent or at least minimize attacks such as those of September 11th on America and Americans, going to war with virtually all non-state military entities in the world is the worst imaginable way to go about it," writes Lind.
While American casualties have been "small" so far in Afghanistan, Lind notes there is a much wider and longer-term challenge posed by an extensive American presence in Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern states. Many Islamics are hostile to America and the West and our very presence in the region is likely to inflame their hostility and increase their numbers, particularly in nstable Middle Eastern countries.
On the home front, the "War on Terrorism" is considered to be a good reason to increase the budgets of the bureaucracy rather than to take the needed steps to increase security that are likely to not be "Politically Correct," including the use of religious and ethnic profiling.
Lind explains that America is fighting its first real "Fourth Generation" conflict in which the enemy is not another nation-state, but a religion. He first discussed the changes underway in warfare that would take place in the post-Cold War era in two articles he co-authored for The Marine Corps Gazette in 1989 and 1994. The articles were cited for their prescience in the post-9/11 era in the Atlantic Monthly.
